Introduction

You Don't Have to Be a Tech Person

A straightforward look at what AI is — and what it isn't

Let me be honest with you. When I first started hearing the word artificial intelligence everywhere I went, my first thought was the same as yours probably is right now. That sounds complicated. That sounds like something for younger people. That sounds like it has nothing to do with the life I am living.

I was wrong. And if you have picked up this guide, you are already one step ahead of where I was. Because the truth is, AI is not just for tech experts or college students or Silicon Valley. It is for anyone who wants to make their life a little easier, a little richer, and a little more connected. That includes you.

Here is the simplest way I can put it. Artificial intelligence is software that can have a conversation with you, answer your questions, help you write things, plan things, and think through things. It is available on your phone, your tablet, or your computer. It does not require any special training. If you can send a text message, you have everything you need to get started.

This guide is not going to bury you in technical jargon. What you will find in these pages are real, practical examples of how people in your season of life are already using AI to do things that genuinely matter — staying connected with family, managing their health information, planning trips they have been putting off for years, and preserving memories they want to leave behind.

If you can send a text message, you have everything you need to get started with AI.

Chapter 1

What Is AI and Why Should You Care?

Cutting through the confusion and the hype

Turn on the news, open a magazine, or sit down at a family dinner and it will not take long before someone brings up artificial intelligence. Sometimes it is presented as the greatest invention since the printing press. Other times you would think it is the beginning of the end of civilization. The truth, as it usually does, sits somewhere in the middle.

Artificial intelligence, at its core, is a computer program trained on enormous amounts of written information — books, articles, conversations, websites — that has learned how to respond to questions in plain, natural language. Think of it less like a robot and more like a very well-read assistant who never sleeps, never gets impatient, and is always available to help.

You have almost certainly used AI already without realizing it. When Netflix suggests a movie you might enjoy, that is AI. When your email filters out spam, that is AI. When you ask Siri or Alexa a question, that is AI. Tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot are simply a more conversational, more flexible version of what you have already been using for years.

AI tools work differently from a regular internet search. Instead of sending you to a list of links, an AI reads your question and gives you a direct, conversational answer. It is the difference between being handed a stack of books versus sitting down with a knowledgeable friend who can just tell you what you need to know.

Three Things to Remember About AI

  • AI is a conversational tool — you talk to it like a helpful friend
  • You are almost certainly already using AI in some form every day
  • You do not need any technical background to get real value from it

Chapter 2

Getting Started Without the Stress

The three easiest AI tools for beginners — and how to use them today

There are three AI tools that are genuinely beginner-friendly, free to use, and useful for everyday life. You do not need all three — just pick one and spend fifteen minutes with it.

Tool One: ChatGPT

ChatGPT is the most widely known AI tool in the world. It is conversational, patient, and incredibly versatile. Go to chat.openai.com, click "Sign up," and create a free account. Once you are in, type your question exactly the way you would say it out loud to a friend.

Tool Two: Google Gemini

If you already use Gmail or Google Search, Gemini is going to feel very familiar. Simply go to gemini.google.com and sign in with your existing Google account. No new password required. Gemini is especially good for research and health questions.

Tool Three: Microsoft Copilot

If you use a Windows computer, you already have access to Microsoft Copilot at copilot.microsoft.com. It is particularly helpful for drafting emails and summarizing articles. If you get stuck, just tell the AI — it will not judge you. You are in control of the conversation at all times.

You do not need to know everything about AI. You only need to know enough to take one step.

Chapter 3

Everyday Uses That Make Life Easier

Writing, health questions, planning — AI handles more than you think

These are not theoretical examples. These are things real people in their fifties, sixties, and seventies are doing every week to make their days smoother, their minds sharper, and their time better spent.

Writing Messages, Letters, and Emails

Tell the AI what you want to say and who you are saying it to, and it will give you a solid first draft to work with. Want to write a heartfelt note to your son on his birthday? Need a firm but polite letter to your homeowner's association? Trying to put together a eulogy for a beloved friend? AI can help — and you always have the final say.

Getting Answers to Health Questions

You leave the doctor's office with questions you forgot to ask. AI can help you work through those questions at home, at your own pace. Ask it to explain what a medication does in plain English, or help you prepare a list of questions for your next appointment. AI is not a replacement for your doctor — it helps you become a more informed, more prepared patient.

Planning Trips, Events, and Daily Routines

Tell AI where you want to go, how long you will be there, what you enjoy, and any limitations you have. It will put together a full day-by-day itinerary including restaurants, attractions, and packing suggestions.

Try This Today — Three Easy Starting Points

  • Ask AI to write a birthday message for someone you love
  • Ask AI to explain a medical term your doctor recently used
  • Ask AI to plan a one-day itinerary for a city you want to visit

Chapter 4

Staying Connected With Loved Ones

Using AI to close the distance between generations

One of the things that changes most dramatically in the retirement years is the rhythm of connection. The kids are grown and busy. The grandchildren are scattered. Friends move away or slow down. AI will not replace the people you love. But it can help you stay closer to them, communicate better with them, and leave something behind that will outlast you.

Bridging the Gap Between Generations

Ask AI to explain something your grandchildren are interested in so you have something to talk about. On the flip side, AI can help you share your world with them — write a short story about your childhood, or a letter explaining what life was like when you were their age.

Preserving Family Stories and Memories

You carry stories inside you that no one else has. AI can help you turn those stories into something that lasts. Tell the story in a voice memo app, paste the transcript into an AI tool, and ask it to help you clean it up. What matters most is that the story gets told.

Simple Tools Your Whole Family Can Use Together

Sit down with a grandchild and ask the AI a question together. Technology does not have to separate the generations — in the right hands, it becomes one of the things that brings them closer.

The stories inside you are irreplaceable. AI can help make sure they are never lost.

Chapter 5

Protecting Yourself Online

Stay safe, stay smart — what every senior needs to know about AI scams

The same technology that makes AI so powerful has also made online scams more convincing than ever. People are using AI to write believable phishing emails, create fake voices that sound like your grandchildren, and build websites that look completely legitimate. This is not a reason to avoid AI. It is a reason to understand it well enough to recognize when someone is using it against you.

How to Spot AI-Generated Scams

The grandparent scam is one of the most dangerous. A caller uses AI to mimic the voice of a grandchild claiming to be in trouble and needing money. The rule is simple: hang up and call that family member directly using the number you already have. A real emergency will still be real sixty seconds later.

What Personal Information to Never Share

Never type your Social Security number, Medicare ID, bank account number, or credit card information into any AI tool or chat window. Treat your AI conversations the way you would treat a conversation in a coffee shop — useful and open, but not the place for your most sensitive personal details.

Your Personal Online Safety Checklist

Never share SSN, Medicare ID, or bank details in any AI tool or chat
Verify unexpected calls from "family" by hanging up and calling them directly
If an email creates urgency and asks for information — it is a scam
When in doubt, slow down and call someone you trust

Chapter 6

Your Next Step Starts Today

A simple action plan — and an invitation to go further

You have made it to the end of this guide, and that tells me something important about you. You are the kind of person who follows through. You are someone who takes their life seriously enough to keep learning, keep growing, and keep looking for ways to make what matters most even better.

Here is all you need to do this week. Pick one AI tool — ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Microsoft Copilot. Create a free account. And ask it one question. Just one. That is your entire assignment. From there, the curiosity tends to take over on its own.

At jpmorandaicoach.com you will find a growing library of resources designed specifically for people in your season of life — e-books, audiobooks, articles, and interactive tools. This guide is a gift from our family to yours.

What matters most is not the size of the step. It is that you take one — today.
